There is something about the transition from summer into fall that always makes me pause.
The days begin to feel a little different. The light starts to change, mornings become cooler, and the long, expansive energy of summer slowly gives way to something more grounded and intentional.
Summer has its own rhythm. It invites us outside, into the sunshine, into nature, water, travel, connection and longer days. But eventually, the season begins to turn, and we are reminded that everything moves in cycles.
Fall invites us to slow down, turn inward and create a little more structure in our lives.
The Importance of Routine and Discipline
For me, this time of year has become a reminder of how important routine and discipline are.
Having a rhythm to my days helps me feel grounded. Getting up, moving my body, practicing yoga and meditation, getting outside, taking care of myself and creating structure in my day all make a difference.
But there is something else I have been learning.
Discipline doesn’t always mean doing more. And it doesn’t always mean continuing to do the same thing.
Sometimes you can be disciplined. You can show up for yourself. You can follow your routine and genuinely try to take care of yourself, and yet still find yourself thinking, Why don’t I feel any different?
I’ve been learning that when something isn’t shifting, sometimes the answer isn’t to push harder.
Sometimes it’s time to change something.
Maybe the routine that once supported you needs to evolve. Maybe your body is asking for a different kind of movement. Maybe you need more rest, more connection, more creativity or more time in nature. Maybe something that worked for you in one season of your life simply doesn’t work in the same way anymore.
And I think there is something beautiful about recognizing that.
Nature doesn’t stay the same, and neither are we meant to.
The Autumn Equinox
The Autumn Equinox marks the transition from summer into autumn. It is one of two points during the year when day and night are approximately equal in length, creating a natural moment of balance between light and darkness.
From this point forward, the days gradually become shorter and the nights longer as we move toward winter.
The equinox can be viewed as a beautiful reminder of balance.
Light and darkness.
Doing and resting.
Giving and receiving.
Moving forward and turning inward.
It can also be a wonderful opportunity to pause and ask yourself:
What is working in my life right now?
What isn’t?
What am I ready to release?
And what am I ready to welcome into this next season?
We often think of a new beginning as something that happens in January, but nature gives us many opportunities throughout the year to begin again.
The Autumn Equinox is one of them.
A Simple Autumn Equinox Ritual
You don’t need anything elaborate to honor the changing season. A few quiet moments and a willingness to be present with yourself can be enough.
Find a peaceful place where you won’t be interrupted. Light a candle if that feels meaningful to you, take a few slow breaths, and allow yourself to settle into the moment.
Then take out a journal and reflect on the season that is coming to a close.
Reflect
Think about the past few months.
What did summer bring into your life?
What experiences, relationships, lessons or moments are you grateful for?
What did you discover about yourself?
Write whatever comes to you without trying to make it perfect.
Release
Now ask yourself:
What am I ready to leave behind?
This could be an old belief, a habit, a pattern, a fear, a relationship dynamic or simply something that no longer feels aligned with who you are becoming.
Write it down.
You can even imagine yourself releasing it with each exhale.
Realign
Now turn your attention toward the season ahead.
Ask yourself:
What do I want to cultivate this fall?
Maybe it’s peace.
Maybe it’s consistency.
Maybe it’s confidence, creativity, connection, self-love or simply feeling more present in your own life.
And then ask yourself one question that has been especially meaningful to me lately:
What might I need to do differently?
Not what do I need to do more of.
Not how can I push myself harder.
But what might I need to change?
Give yourself permission to listen honestly.
Choose one small shift you can make as you enter this new season.
It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes the smallest changes create the space for something new to unfold.
When you’re finished, take a few quiet moments to breathe and visualize yourself moving into autumn feeling grounded, supported and open to what is ahead.
Allow Yourself to Change With the Season
One of the things I love about the changing seasons is that nature doesn’t apologize for changing.
The trees don’t hold onto their leaves because they are afraid of what comes next. Summer doesn’t try to stay forever. Each season has its own purpose, its own rhythm and its own beauty.
Maybe we can learn from that.
There are times in life when discipline is exactly what we need. We need to create structure, establish healthy habits and keep showing up for ourselves even when we don’t feel motivated.
But there are also times when discipline can become rigidity.
When we keep doing the same things simply because they worked before.
When what we really need is to pause, listen and make a change.
I’m learning that taking care of myself isn’t about following a perfect routine. It’s about paying attention.
It’s about noticing when something is supporting me and when something needs to shift.
It’s about having the discipline to show up, but also having the awareness to recognize when it’s time to do something differently.
As we move from summer into fall, perhaps this can be an invitation for all of us to do the same.
Take a moment to reflect on where you’ve been.
Honor what you’ve learned.
Release what you no longer need.
Create structure where it supports you.
And when something isn’t working, give yourself permission to try a new way.
A new season doesn’t require you to become a new person. It simply gives you an opportunity to meet yourself where you are and choose what comes next.
May this autumn bring you grounding, balance, clarity and the courage to make the changes that support the person you are becoming.
A Client Reflection
“I came to Mia feeling overwhelmed and stuck in patterns that I had been carrying for a long time. Through our work together, I began to feel more confident, more connected to myself, and more capable of creating changes in my life. I learned to prioritize myself and develop healthier ways of caring for myself.” –Nicki, Maryland
