There is something about the heart of summer that invites us to slow down.
By this point in the season, many of us have settled into the rhythm of summer. The excitement of its arrival has faded, routines have shifted, and before we know it, we begin noticing just how quickly the season is passing.
Every year, this time of year brings me back to Finland. Growing up, I spent many of my summers there visiting my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Those experiences shaped the way I relate to summer and the importance of slowing down, and they continue to influence my work today as a hypnotherapist.
When I think of Finland, I picture crystal clear lakes, endless forests, and the deep blue of the sea. I remember jumping into the cold lake after sitting in the sauna, grilling dinner by the water, and lingering outside late into the evening while the sky stayed light. Everything seemed to slow down.
People weren’t rushing from one thing to the next. They spent time together, enjoyed nature, and appreciated the simple moments. Looking back, I realize those summers taught me something I didn’t fully understand at the time.
Nature has its own rhythm, and when we allow ourselves to move with it, something within us begins to soften.
I think this is something many of us have lost touch with.
Our lives are often filled with stress, busy schedules, and endless to do lists. We move through our days thinking about what comes next instead of fully experiencing where we are.
Summer offers us another way.
What Summer Can Teach Us About Slowing Down
Even now, in the middle of the season, there is still time to slow down.
Spend an evening outside instead of in front of a screen.
Take a walk without your phone.
Sit by a lake, the ocean, or beneath your favorite tree.
Watch a sunset.
Notice the warmth of the sun on your skin, the sound of birds in the morning, or the breeze moving through the trees.
These simple moments may seem small, but they gently bring us back to the present. They remind us that healing isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about allowing ourselves to pause long enough to experience the life that’s already unfolding around us.
Summer and Nervous System Healing
As a hypnotherapist, I often see how easily we disconnect from ourselves. We spend so much time in our minds that we forget what it feels like to simply be present.
When we’re constantly rushing, our nervous system rarely has an opportunity to slow down. We remain in a state of doing instead of being.
Spending time in nature, taking a few deep breaths, or sitting quietly in the evening sun may seem simple, but these moments can help calm the nervous system and create space for healing.
Healing doesn’t always happen during the big breakthroughs.
Sometimes it happens in the quiet moments when we finally feel safe enough to slow down.
That is one of the greatest gifts summer offers us.
An Invitation for the Rest of Summer
Summer can be a powerful time for healing.
It invites us to move out of survival mode and into connection with ourselves, with nature, and with a deeper sense of grounded presence.
As you move through the rest of the season, I invite you to keep it simple.
Spend more time outside when you can.
Take walks without your phone.
Sit in the sun for a few quiet minutes.
Read a book under a tree.
Watch the sunset linger a little longer.
Let yourself do a little less and be more present with what is already here.
Summer does not last forever, and that is part of what makes it meaningful.
Not because we need to make the most of it.
But because it reminds us we are already in it.
